Taiwan has unveiled a significant initiative to address menstrual equity by providing period products to all schools and offering financial support to low-income students for independent purchases. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced over NT$100 million (US$3.18 million) to ensure that menstrual care products are available in educational institutions and other key locations across the country. This move aims to alleviate the financial and psychological burden faced by women while promoting education about menstruation.
The program is anticipated to benefit around 95,000 students, fostering a positive impact on their well-being and educational experience. Period poverty, a term coined by the U.N., refers to the challenges faced by low-income individuals in affording essential menstrual products, leading to economic hardships.
Under this initiative, students from primary to high school levels will have access to menstrual products through physical supplies or coupons redeemable at supermarkets. Similarly, university students in need can apply for subsidies to complement their living expenses. The plan also involves establishing convenient pick-up points for menstrual products at healthcare centers and other suitable venues.
Beyond the tangible provisions, the MOE intends to enhance gender equality education, bridging the knowledge gap about menstruation and dismantling societal taboos. This multifaceted effort signifies a triumph for gender equality and women's empowerment, as it enables young individuals to manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence. Additionally, it showcases Taiwan's commitment to supporting its citizens' well-being and eradicating period-related challenges, contributing to a more equitable society for all.
