Greece Takes a Stand Against Conversion Therapy: A Victory for Equality

Athens, May 13 - Greece has approved a new bill prohibiting conversion therapy for minors, marking a significant step forward in protecting LGBTQ+ rights. The legislation allows the administration of such therapy only in the event of explicit consent from the person in question; a violation of this may result in severe legal consequences.

This move aligns with Greece's broader commitment to gender equality, as outlined in its national strategy running until 2025. Greece's decision follows the lead of Canada, New Zealand, and France, which also recently criminalized conversion therapy.

In an effort of liberalization, Greece intends to outlaw surgeries on intersex infants and babies born with chromosomal variations that do not conform to conventional definitions of male or female.

Greece's ban on conversion therapy for minors is a triumph for human rights and LGBTQ+ equality. Greece now joins the growing movement providing the LGBTQ+ population with appropriate legal frameworks in the event of their persecution.
