The goal for decarbonized air transport “contribute to the green innovation and implementation momentum, which must be accelerated over the coming decades to ultimately achieve emissions-free powered flight,” said the President of the ICAO Council Mr. Salvatore Sciacchitano. This momentous declaration, endorsed during the ICAO Assembly, not only aligns with concurrent industry pledges but also signifies a significant stride towards nurturing green innovation and expediting the transition to emission-free powered flight.
One of the central issues that emerged during the Assembly was the imperative need for viable financing and investment support to underpin these multifaceted measures. In response, there were earnest calls for the convening of a third ICAO Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels in 2023. The gathering acknowledged that addressing carbon dioxide emissions from international flights is vital, as it complements environmental commitments within the Paris Agreement.
ICAO's mission extends far beyond mere connectivity; it is about connecting families, cultures, and businesses globally while promoting sustainable growth and socio-economic prosperity wherever aircraft traverse. In this bold commitment to achieving carbon-neutral aviation, ICAO underscores its enduring commitment to both the aviation industry and the global environment.
The decision-making at ICAO Assembly events resides with nation-states, yet the collaborative discussions and outcomes, exemplified by the 2050 net-zero goal, draw heavily from invaluable contributions by industry and civil society groups, participating as official observers. This reaffirms the collective will to usher in a greener, more sustainable era for air travel.
