Geneva, 27 February – In Geneva, a crucial gathering is taking place, with donors convening to raise $4.3 billion to extend vital support and protection to the beleaguered population of Yemen, a nation engulfed in one of the most severe humanitarian crises worldwide.

Despite a six-month period of ceasefire in the previous year, profound suffering continues to grip Yemen due to a deteriorating economy and the collapse of fundamental services. The humanitarian situation remains critical as over 21 million Yemenis—equivalent to two-thirds of the population—urgently require assistance and safeguarding.

For nearly eight years, Yemen's people have borne the harsh consequences of the protracted conflict between government forces, supported by Saudi Arabia, and Houthi rebels. In addition to the conflict, the country grapples with the menacing challenges of severe drought and destructive flooding, which threaten the safety and well-being of its citizens.

Highlighting the commitment to alleviate the dire conditions, the United States announced a substantial aid package of $444 million for Yemen, with the goal of alleviating the suffering endured by millions.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged all donors to contribute generously to meet the $4.3 billion requirement set by the UN to provide critical humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni population. He emphasized that a staggering two-thirds of Yemen's population, totaling 21.6 million individuals comprising children, women, and men, are in dire need of essential aid.

Additionally, amidst the already strained circumstances, Yemen demonstrates remarkable solidarity by hosting around 100,000 refugees and asylum seekers from other conflict-affected nations, including Somalia and Ethiopia.

This global effort to extend aid to Yemen signifies a victory for humanity as it reflects the unity of nations in times of crisis. The willingness to join forces and provide substantial resources demonstrates the shared belief in the importance of alleviating suffering and building a more stable and compassionate world.
