Record Low: Fossil Fuels Generate Only 33% of EU's Power in 2023

Brussels, Aug 30 (Reuters) - In a significant milestone, fossil fuels accounted for just 33% of the European Union's power generation during the first half of 2023, marking the lowest share since 1990, according to researchers. The primary driver behind this shift was reduced electricity demand, allowing renewable energy sources to fulfill a larger portion of the energy requirements.

Several factors contributed to this historic development, including milder weather conditions, energy-saving policies, and elevated gas and power prices following disruptions in gas supplies from Russia in the previous year. These circumstances prompted both industries and consumers to adopt more energy-efficient practices.

Comparing the power demand in the first half of 2023 with the same period in 2022, there was a notable 4.6% decrease, while fossil fuels' contribution to power generation dropped from 38% to 33% over the same year-on-year period.

Across the EU's 27 member states, power generation from fossil fuels saw a significant 17% decline in the first half of the year compared to 2022. Among these fossil fuels, coal, known for its high carbon emissions, experienced the most substantial reduction.

Notably, in May, coal contributed to less than 10% of the EU's electricity production, a historic low. While the decline in gas-fueled power generation was less dramatic, EU countries were actively seeking alternatives to replace Russian gas supplies.

Simultaneously, the production of clean energy continued to rise, with countries investing in wind farms and solar panels. However, Ember, the think tank behind this research, emphasized the urgent need for better infrastructure to integrate renewable energy sources into existing power grids.

In some EU countries, such as Spain and Poland, solar power production has occasionally been curtailed to prevent grid overload or because it has proven more cost-effective than shutting down fossil fuel power plants.

The remarkable reduction in fossil fuel-based power generation within the EU represents a significant victory for humanity's efforts to combat climate change. It underscores the region's commitment to transitioning to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. The decline in fossil fuel reliance not only reduces carbon emissions but also aligns with the EU's broader environmental goals. It serves as an inspiring example of how concerted efforts and investments in renewable energy can reshape the energy landscape, offering hope for a greener and more sustainable future.
