Routine Blood Tests Could Speed Up Early Cancer Diagnosis for People with Stomach Pain

Recent research indicates that routine blood tests could expedite the early detection of cancer in individuals experiencing stomach pain or bloating. A study led by University College London (UCL) researchers found that abnormal results in 19 commonly used blood tests were linked to a higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer within a year.

The study analyzed data from 477,870 patients aged 30 and above who presented with new abdominal symptoms. The researchers assessed the predictive value of 19 abnormal blood test results for detecting underlying cancer. They found that certain abnormal blood test results were associated with an increased risk of cancer, suggesting that these tests could be used to identify individuals at higher risk and expedite their referral for further investigation.

This approach could lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment, potentially improving outcomes for patients with abdominal cancers. However, the researchers emphasize the need for further studies to validate these findings and determine the most effective use of routine blood tests in cancer detection.

In summary, incorporating routine blood tests into the diagnostic process for individuals with stomach pain or bloating could enhance early cancer detection, leading to timely interventions and better patient outcomes.
