Scotland Achieves Landmark in Public Health: Enforces Legislation for Free Period Products

Scotland has achieved a milestone in public health by enacting legislation that mandates the provision of free period products in public settings. This groundbreaking Period Products Act, which came into effect on Monday, establishes Scotland as the first country globally to safeguard the right to free sanitary products. Under its enacting, authorities are now obligated to provide free period products to those that require it.

"Local authorities and partner organisations have worked hard to make the legal right to access free period products a reality. This is another big milestone for period dignity campaigners and grassroots movements which shows the difference that progressive and bold political choices can make. As the cost-of-living crisis takes hold, the Period Products Act is a beacon of hope which shows what can be achieved when politicians come together for the good of the people we serve." Monica Lennon, the labor MSP, told BBC.

By legally requiring the provision of free period products, Scotland acknowledges that menstrual hygiene is a fundamental right, not a privilege. This move certainly helps fight the stigma around menstruation and period poverty, signifying a step in the right direction.
