Steady Decline: Cancer Mortality Rates in the U.S. Show 33% Decline Since 1991

Jan 16, 2023 - Recent findings from the American Cancer Society reveal that the mortality rate has experienced a substantial decrease of 33% since 1991, resulting in a notable reduction of 3.5 million deaths.

The success of this trend is attributed to a combination of factors, including diminished smoking prevalence, heightened screening efforts, early diagnosis practices, and advancements in treatments.

A particularly notable decline has been observed in cancer-related deaths among children and adolescents. The report indicates a 71% reduction in cancer death rates among children since the 1970s, accompanied by a 61% decrease for individuals aged 15 to 19.

Furthermore, among women in their early 20s, cervical cancer incidence has notably plummeted by 65% since 2012.

As per the report, the cancer categories boasting the highest survival rates are thyroid at 98%, prostate at 97%, testis at 95%, and melanoma at 94%.

The remarkable decline in cancer mortality rates in the United States is a victory that reflects the progress achieved through concerted efforts in research, healthcare, and public awareness. The significant reduction of cancer-related deaths is a reflection of the strides made in understanding, preventing, detecting, and treating this formidable disease.
