White rhinoceroses have marked a triumphant comeback to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following an absence of nearly two decades.
On June 10, sixteen southern white rhinos were released into DRC's Garamba National Park.
Officials from the park confirm that 16 Southern White Rhinos have been effectively relocated from Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa to Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This significant translocation marks a substantial stride towards reinstating ecological equilibrium and safeguarding the distinctive faunal legacy of Garamba National Park. The southern white rhinoceros will wield a pivotal influence within the park's ecosystem.
The last remaining white rhino in the park fell victim to poaching in 2006.
The successful endeavor was orchestrated by ICCN, the conservation non-governmental organization African Parks, and Canadian mining enterprise Barrick Gold, which sponsored the rhino relocation.
Anticipations are in place for the introduction of additional southern white rhinos to Garamba National Park in the future.
